Ask Beverly Markus and she’ll tell you, “Travel is the best education there is.” She was a sophomore at Ohio State the first time she traveled outside the country. Now, nearly six decades later, she’s a seasoned traveler who has seen the world. Education abroad changed her life, and the lives of hundreds of students still today. “That’s what opened the world to me — different language, different food and different culture. How exhilarating I found it,” she reminisced about her trip to Mexico. “It was the best thing I ever did and a wonderful learning experience.” Markus graduated from Ohio State in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Clothing and Textiles from the now obsolete School of Home Economics. A proud Buckeye, Markus convinced her mother to make an estate gift to her alma mater. Mable and her husband Paul Jones had once resided in Newark, Markus’s birthplace; thus, Markus decided that the fund would benefit Ohio State Newark in honor of her parents. Add in Markus’s own love for travel, and the Paul B. and Mable D. Jones Endowed Fund for Study Abroad was established in 2016. “If the opportunity presents itself, I hope students make every effort to take advantage of leaving their world to go outside their comfort zone. It will make them a bigger and better person,” Markus said. The fund provides assistance with tuition and travel costs for students participating in the education abroad program. All education abroad programming is subsidized at Ohio State Newark so students never pay more than $1,000 and also receive reimbursement for passport fees. This has allowed them to travel to faraway places like Havana, Cuba; Montreal, Canada; and Liverpool, England. “What you learn about yourself is invaluable,” said senior Andrew Hawthorn who studied abroad in Berlin, Germany, in 2016. “Until this trip, I was a relatively quiet, uninvolved student. A week in a foreign country does wonders to open people up. My life and college career have never been the same since.”   MAKING EDUCATION ABROAD POSSIBLE Paul B. and Mable D.
